When I gave Dennis this task, I did try using SO's for a little bit. It's been a while so I'm shooting from the hip, but I remember when I was looking into detecting changes in an SO property it just didn't feel right. I think it is possible, but you might have to continually check for changes to the property manually which means continualy reading the SO. If there is an elegant solution to using SO's that'd be good particularly for very large data. Otherwise Dennis' solution works great ... I like how it feels lke asynchronous file i/o. If you couldn't tell, I'm all about feelings.

what are the security/domain limitations of a local shared object? i thought that there may be some restriction?

I had to send bitmapdata from an as2 module to an as3 app and hit the 40k limit let alone the headache that the AV1Movie 'black box' class causes (i'm actually glad as2 gets almost zero access to as3)...

in the end i decided to move the bitmap editing logic from a hidious as2 module into my app and spent the whole night refactoring sloppy code...

@GMalartre: i am going to try out the shared object hack and see if i can actually build an api around it... it's bound to come in handy one of these days...

@Dennis i really like what you did with that bytearray... certainly something to consider using...

(you might find this funny... that nasty as2 module had a whopping 938 lines of procedural script in a single frame, i almost lost my mind...)

This appears to be an issue with Mac and FireFox, if you open the page in Safari it should appear normally.

I will try and figure out the issue though.

Fiddler works well within Firefox using the FoxyProxy addon. I've used it for years for debugging and it works extremely well.

I was lazy and didn't want to supply a whole how-to in these comments but found a good writeup someone else has made here:
http://davidtse916.wordpress.com/2007/07/26/switch-proxy-settings-on-firefox-using-foxyproxy/

It's good to note that the proxy settings are available with a little drop down menu at the bottom RHS of your brower (actually a drop-up menu.) And you can flick between the proxy and direct connection with fiddler2 still open in the background.

The other nice thing about fiddler is the Rules > Performance > Simulate Modem speeds option which is handy for testing preloaders.

The only thing I'm still on the lookout for is a AMF plugin for fiddler.

Cheers,

Another possible way :

You could store the data in a LocalSharedObject without splitting it and listen for a change in the other applications.

Of course it mean some different handling, but in my case the LocalSharedObject is already a prerequist.

Hello, I generated a bug in the Flash IDE on my MacBook Pro OS X 10.5 while attempting to execute the VirtualZoo application for Essential ActionScript 3.0 by Colin Moock.

Bug: "A definition for the document class could not be found in the classpath. So one will be automatically generated in the swf file upon export."

It seems Flash is not able find any classes in the project’s directory. Even when creating a new FLA file with a classpath entry to the project’s directory ; the compiler would just refuse to find ANY classes in that particular directory.

Since I am not a programmer and am not familiar with SVN, can someone tell me how to correctly subversion “EXPORT” the project via the Mac terminal. I have attempted, however it generated this message:

acespotan-macbook-pro:bin acespotan$ svn export file:///Users/acespotan/Desktop/virtualzoo/src
svn: Unable to open an ra_local session to URL
svn: Unable to open repository ‘file:///Users/acespotan/Desktop/virtualzoo/src’

I have also downloaded the latest subversion from http://subversion.tigris.org/ as well as snvX recommended by online flash blogs; however I must be typing the syntax incorrectly because it does not give me an option to export. HELP!!!

Any help is much appreciated, thanks much in advance.

Yeah, that's what we've been doing (exporting and working in another directory and so forth). PIA.

I do regularly produce asdocs which chokes on invalid imports so those _should_ be gone. But you never can be too sure.

I haven't tried that one yet. I'm usually a little weary of browser based HTTP tools because they tend to slightly alter the experience and sometimes cause false bugs (e.g. FireBug). Well, actually I've seen Fiddler and ServiceCapture do that too. I'll have to give HttpFox a shot. Thanks...

Hey,

I've had this problem before.
The solution is either to export your svn repository before compiling, or (more preferably for me) fix your invalid imports. That is, imports that you've included, but don't actually resolve to anything.. this might involve some work to go through your .as files :)

When you say "Note that we’re assuming in this example that the id of the outer tag is content."

Do you mean the second param to the .embedSWF method or do you mean the div that holds everything?

So which div from below would equal your content from above? my-wrapper : flashDiv?
